Community: 
Laurel Hill is predominantly a single-family residential community. The government consists of a mayor and city council. The city council meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month
promptly at 7 PM. Drop in, your participation is always appreciated.

History - Okaloosa County was created in 1915. It was named for Choctaw words oka (water) and lusa (black). Article: History of Laurel Hill by Mark Curenton.

Geography - According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,802 km˛ (1,082 mi˛). 2,423 km˛ (936 mi˛) of it is land and 379 km˛ (146 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 13.53% water. Laurel Hill is located at 30°57'55" North, 86°27'33" West (30.965369, -86.459149) 

Demographics - As of the census of 2000, there are 549 people, 223 households, and 158 families residing in the city of Laurel Hill. The population density is 67.5/km˛ (174.9/mi˛). There are 254 housing units at an average density of 31.2/km˛ (80.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 77.23% White, 21.68% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 0.18% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. 

There are 223 households out of which 30.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.8% are married couples living together, 17.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% are non-families. 25.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.93. 

In the city the population is spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.3 males. 

The median income for a household in the city is $25,385, and the median income for a family is $28,281. Males have a median income of $25,809 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,949. 21.6% of the population and 18.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.2% are under the age of 18 and 9.4% are 65 or older.
